The word bankruptcy can strike fear into anyone. It is a last resort but can offer great relief to the person that is walking around with a debt monkey on their back. Some people file bankruptcy because they were ill and racked up too much medical debts. Others lost their jobs and had to rely on their credit cards with astronomical percentage rates. I’ve met with people who were foreclosed on, lost their house and still owed $60,000.00 to the bank!
Bankruptcy isn’t for everyone and there are different types of bankruptcy. You may want to consider filing bankruptcy if:
1. The creditors are calling and the mail is piling up. Many times, my clients bring in stacks of unopened mail because they knew it was from their creditors and could not face it. Imagine…going to your mailbox without that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach!
2. You are being garnished. You were sued for not being able to pay and now a portion of your paycheck is going to paying that bill and suddenly, you cannot pay your other bills! It’s a vicious cycle.
3. You are facing a foreclosure or have already been foreclosed upon.
4. You are draining your retirement to keep your head above water. ACK! This is very scary and I say call a bankruptcy attorney NOW!
Filing bankruptcy is a big decision and once you’ve made the decision to move forward, I HIGHLY recommend visiting an experienced bankruptcy attorney.
