Our office filed a lawsuit against Rite Aid Corporation  for race discrimination, unlawful restraint, and defamation of character for falsely accusing a black female customer of stealing merchandise from its store, and by forcing her to empty her pockets twice in front of customers, and by calling the police and reporting that she stole merchandise from its store, which were false.

The suit alleges that Rite Aid engaged in racial profiling, and racial stereotyping in confronting our client, a mother of two with no criminal history, and falsely accused her of stealing merchandise without any evidence that she stole merchandise.  Further, Rite Aid called the police and made reckless allegations that our client stole merchandize without having any reasonable basis to make that claim.

Racial profiling of two African American shoppers remains a problem. There were a series of high profile cases in the media of stores like Barneys of New York and MACY's, where black shoppers were stopped and detailed and false accused of stealing merchandize.

Discrimination of any kind against customers of a business is illegal and violate federal and state anti-discrimination laws.
