When a job interview is carried out through video conferencing, both the employer and the applicant are disadvantaged. This is according to a new study published in the journalManagement Decision.   Researchers from McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business discovered that job interviewing via video conferencing makes job applicants appear less likeable. Interviewers are also rated by job candidates as less attractive, competent, personable, and trustworthy.

Recent surveys have shown that an estimated 65 percent of employers use video conferencing. But when it comes to recruiting talent, it looks like replacing the traditional face-to-face interview with the popular communications platform is a disservice to both the employer and the prospective candidate. Unable to accurately evaluate a job applicant, an interviewer may miss out on promising individuals who can become valuable assets to the organization. On the other hand, candidates may refuse the job offer because they perceive their interviewers negatively.  For cases when job interviewing can only be accomplished through video conferencing, the following ten tips can help interviewers and candidates cope with the limitations and baggage associated with using the technology as a hiring tool.
